Assistant/Associate Professor in Illustration

Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor in Illustration within the Audain Faculty of Art. Situated on unceded, traditional and ancestral xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territories in Vancouver, Canada, Emily Carr University is a world-renowned learning and research community dedicated to the education of artists and designers.

 

The Illustration area at Emily Carr University focuses on developing critically-engaged and contextually aware illustration work for a variety of fields. Situated within the interdisciplinary Visual Arts BFA in the Audain Faculty of Art, the Illustration area fosters the development of students as makers of visual culture, at the forefront of contemporary art production. With an emphasis on strong technical and conceptual foundation, and a keen awareness of the relationship between meaning, story, and image, the Illustration degree guides students through a range of illustration fields, disciplines, and practices. Our department features a digital lab of computers paired with Wacom Cintiq monitors, a digital printing center, with access to a range of facilities including dry media and painting studios, and a purpose-built print media studio that supports work in letterpress, book arts, relief and screenprinting.

 

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Candidates should be able to teach illustration at multiple levels, from Foundation to Graduate Studies, and will be expected to contribute to developing curriculum in an institution that is committed to the interrelation of theory and practice. The successful candidate will join a rigorous and committed team of Art faculty that also includes the following curriculum areas: Ceramics, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Drawing, Print Media, Sculpture + Expanded Practices, New Media + Sound Arts, Performance, Interdisciplinary Visual Art and Praxis, as well as minors in Curatorial Practices and Art + Text. Candidates should be equally fluent in contemporary illustration discourse and studio practice and in balancing the conceptual, aesthetic and technical demands of the field. Additionally, faculty are expected to participate in portfolio reviews, upper-level critiques, provide graduate student supervision, serve on administrative committees, engage in research, and to be an active member of the Emily Carr community. The successful candidate will have an active illustration-based practice, which could include working in publishing and book media, socially-engaged projects, digital interfaces, the film, animation, and video game industries, textiles, gallery exhibitions, and work that engages with the broader field through various forms of dissemination.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

A successful candidate will have the following qualifications and/or related experience:

 

  • MFA or equivalent graduate degree in a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Teaching experience is required; experience teaching university‐level or post‐secondary in a related subject area is preferable.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills.
  • An awareness of the complexities of local, regional, and global cultures and competence in their social interplay.
  • An understanding of the field of illustration as a community of visual culture-makers.
  • Professional experience in a range of illustration fields, with an ability to integrate and assess traditional, experimental, and digital illustration techniques.
  • Knowledge and ability to teach a fair range of material processes, such as sketching and other drawing media; pen and ink; basic printmaking; watercolour and other paint media; and/or digital applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, ClipStudio Paint, and ProCreate.
  • Strong evidence of excellence in illustration practice that may include hybrid and/or expanded artworks that go beyond industry-oriented illustration fields, such as: artwork for exhibitions, social engagement, public art, collaborative projects, self-publication, and other areas of inquiry.
  • Demonstrated engagement with illustration in the broader field, including illustration in the global art-historical context, and experience with regional and global illustration groups, societies, competitions, and conventions.
  • An understanding of the full spectrum of illustration genres and areas of focus, as well as the broad extent of art economies (commercial, gallery-based, collective, public, socially engaged, etc.), translating into an ability to broaden students’ perspectives along these lines.

 

Expertise in the following areas will be considered an asset:

  • Ecologically sustainable and socially conscious approaches and methods.
  • A practice that decentralizes colonial traditions in illustration and their social frameworks.
  • The ability to integrate both new and traditional tools, media and methods into illustration curriculum, including emerging technologies and new digital illustration formats.

  • supporting materials including an online portfolio of recent work (20 images or a link to a website); and
  • the names and contact information of three referees.

Subject to budgetary approval, we anticipate commencement in August 2023.  Salary and rank will be commensurate with professional status and teaching experience.
