The Department of German and Italian at Smith College invites applications for a 3-year renewable, benefits eligible position in German Studies to begin July 1, 2023, at the rank of Core Lecturer. A core lecturer is a continuing, but non-tenure-track member of the faculty whose primary responsibility is teaching. The position includes access to research funds and a track to promotion to Senior Lecturer. The successful candidate will teach 5 courses per year at all levels of the curriculum, in German and in English, as well as actively contribute to department life and curricular development. Area of specialization is open, but interests in Environmental Humanities and Transnational German Studies are highly desirable. Candidates are expected to be fluent in German and English, and have a proven record of excellence in teaching German at the undergraduate level. Ph.D. in German is required at time of appointment. Candidates from groups underrepresented in German Studies are strongly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will be appointed in the Department of German and Italian Studies, where they will teach and be creatively engaged in the department’s transnational approach. We welcome applications from scholars whose work expands beyond the canonical study of German culture and brings a variety of transversal, interdisciplinary and ethically-informed perspectives to the field.
