The English Department at Baruch College, a senior college of the City University of New York located in the vibrant Flatiron neighborhood of mid-town Manhattan, invites applications for a full-time lecturer position to begin August 25, 2023. The College is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to our mission of educating one of the most diverse student bodies in the United States. Successful candidates will collaborate with an engaged full-time and adjunct faculty to teach in either or both of our general education course sequences, First-Year Writing and Great Works of Literature.


Lecturer faculty are considered “master teachers” who occupy faculty lines focused entirely on teaching and service, with no research requirements. Lecturers teach 24 contract hours per year, generally three courses per term in the Great Works and/or First-Year Writing sequences (four-hour courses). Lecturers participate as full faculty members of the English Department, the College, and CUNY, performing committee service and participating in assessment, curriculum design, and faculty and student mentoring. In their fifth year, Lecturers become eligible for promotion to a Certificate of Continuous Employment (tenure-like status) based on teaching excellence and dedicated service.

Candidates will be expected to:

Demonstrate teaching excellence, including creative course and assignment design at the post-secondary level, with an eye towards achieving course learning goals .

Teach primarily in lower division required courses, with particular attention to research methods (in FYW), literary analysis (in GW), and rhetorical analysis (both programs).

Participate in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and, when applicable, writing studies and pedagogy conferences (Lecturer faculty are eligible for professional development and travel funds).

Demonstrate effective teaching in a variety of teaching modalities, including the use of educational technology to support teaching and learning

Compensation and Benefits:

$67,684 - $79,170; commensurate with qualifications and experience.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the Emblem Health HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.

If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day. Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to Emblem Health. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by Emblem Health before the exemption is granted. Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully. Other Qualifications:

Candidates who hold a PhD, MA, or MFA in Rhetoric and Composition, English, English Education, or equivalent field will be given preference. Note that these positions do not require a scholarly / research / publishing agenda.

At least three years of demonstrated, successful experience teaching general education writing and/or literature courses at the college level is preferred.
