OVERVIEW:

JOB SUMMARY:

The Department of Languages & Literature at Lincoln University invites applications for a full-time, Assistant Professor of French with expertise in any area of Afro-Francophone Studies and a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, or the Maghreb. The ideal candidate will show evidence of thoughtful intellectual engagement with the broader conceptual fields of Pan-African Studies, Critical Race Studies, and/or decolonial theory. Candidates with additional competency in Arabic or any African language are encouraged to apply. All candidates must demonstrate fluency in French as well as English. The successful candidate will be a dynamic teacher of undergraduate students as well as a scholar with a dedicated research and publication agenda. The teaching distribution for this position is four courses per semester. Candidates will be expected to teach courses ranging from beginner through intermediate-level French to upper-level seminars in Afro-Francophone literatures and cultures.

 

The successful candidate must possess a Ph.D./terminal degree by the hire date.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will:

  • Offer dynamic, engaging, and student-centered pedagogy utilizing up-to-date expertise in language and literature and the best pedagogical practices in their specified field.
  • Design and update curriculum and syllabi as needed. 
  • Demonstrate effective classroom pedagogy, including effective use of technology, stimulating class discussion, engaging lectures, timely administration and grading of examinations and writing assignments, and timely submission of grades
  • Teach a normal load, typically four courses (in-person) a semester.  These courses range from 100-400 level including language and advanced literature classes.
  • Actively mentor and advise departmental majors.
  • Be a contributing member of departmental and university required meetings and initiatives including departmental meetings events, course and curriculum development, and university-wide initiatives. 
  • Maintain active professional engagement and research, which are required for promotion and tenure consideration.
  • Share the University’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and anti-racist pedagogy and be prepared to join an active cohort of faculty who teach undergraduate courses and advise/mentor students.

EDUCATION:

  • A Ph.D./terminal degree in related field (to be completed by the time of hire).

EXPERIENCE:

  • Evidence of 1+ years of teaching at undergraduate level 
  • Proven agenda of research and professional engagement
  • Communication skills consistent with effective teaching, mentoring and motivating majors from a broad range of cultural, ethnic, and economic backgrounds and actively participating in the department and broader university.
  • Experience in course design, development, and assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Experience utilizing LMS such as Canvas and other software

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Native or near-native fluency in French
  • Native or near-native fluency in English
  • Must demonstrate effectiveness in teaching (including advising), creative or scholarly achievement, and valuable service to the University, community, and/or profession

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Moderate lifting up to 20 pounds as frequently as needed to move objects; dexterity to write and manipulate computer keyboard and mouse; ability to hear and speak clearly; and body mobility to stoop, kneel, bend and reach.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in a university campus environment. All classes are currently taught in-person and faculty are required to be present on campus to teach their courses. The employee is subject to inside environmental conditions and protection from weather conditions.
