Full-Time Lecturer in English, Non-Tenure-Track

The English Department of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville is now accepting applications for one or more full-time lecturer appointments, pending funding, beginning in August 2023. Lecturers teach 12 hours per semester, mostly in our nationally recognized first-year composition program, but also—depending on curricular needs and teacher qualifications—in sophomore or upper-division courses in public and professional writing, literature, and/or creative writing. Additionally, lecturers have the opportunity to create special topics courses in literature and composition. Successful applicants will be part of a collegial community committed to excellent teaching and equity-minded, anti-racist practices.

The position is non-tenure-track, renewable yearly with a salary of $45,000, plus health and retirement benefits, and a generous travel allowance. In addition, it includes opportunities for annual merit raises, promotion and longer contracts, and occasional summer courses for additional pay. Although not required as part of the job duties, the campus offers a variety of resources for professional development, community engagement, service, scholarship, and creative projects; some course releases are available for departmental service or professional development.

UT Knoxville is the flagship campus of the University of Tennessee system and a Carnegie doctoral research extensive university with over 21,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students from over 100 countries. Knoxville has a vibrant literary and arts scene, a lively downtown, and affordable housing. Less than an hour’s drive to the Great Smoky Mountains, the city is also home to 1000 acres of urban wilderness, the Knoxville Museum of Art, and Big Ears, the acclaimed avant-garde festival of film, music, and art.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. or M.F.A. in English or a related discipline in hand by August 1, 2023 and demonstrate experience with innovative and inclusive teaching practices in first-year composition. The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.

Application Instructions:

Applications are due by March 25. Applicants should submit a 1-2 page letter of application, CV, and statement of teaching philosophy via Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/119865.
