Bridge to Faculty Postdoctoral Research Associate – Disability and Human Development


The Department of Disability and Human Development (DHD) in the College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) invites applicants for a Bridge to Faculty Postdoctoral Research Associate position, beginning August 16, 2023. This is a full-time position and includes a competitive salary, benefits package, and the opportunity to be part of a Bridge to Faculty program cohort. Successful applicants must have completed their PhD between August 15, 2020, and August 15, 2023.

We are seeking an emerging critical disability studies scholar in the humanities/arts whose work engages with theories, methods, and content areas that chart new directions in the field. Such work might explore, for example, disability as it engages with intersectionality, decolonialization, chronic illness, madness, neurodiversity, Deafness, debility, global capital, science and technology, posthumanism, climate and environment, and perspectives outside the US.


Bridge to Faculty (B2F) is a recruitment program designed to attract postdoctoral scholars from groups that have been historically underrepresented in their departments or fields, with the goal of a direct transition to a tenure-track junior faculty position after two years. Subject to satisfactory performance and University approval, the successful candidate may be re-appointed for one additional year as a postdoctoral scholar. Successful post-docs may have the opportunity to transition to faculty starting in the 2025-2026 academic year. This recruitment initiative aims to attract and retain promising scholars to UIC as well as diversify our faculty, with particular emphasis on departments with low or no presence of faculty who are underrepresented in their field. The selected scholar will work with a team of mentors within the department and benefit from institutional and departmental resources specifically designed to support their success. Postdoctoral research scholars in DHD are expected to maintain an active research agenda, make progress towards publishing their work, participate in the intellectual life of the department, and teach one course per academic year. No departmental or college service is required during the postdoc years.

The postdoctoral scholar will work with department leadership to identify one or more research mentors within DHD and allied departments (e.g., Gender and Women’s Studies, Museum and Exhibition Studies, English) who will support the candidate’s research and professional development goals. With support from their mentorship team, the post-doctoral scholar will develop a 3 to 5-year research plan.


The Department of Disability and Human Development is an internationally recognized center for the interdisciplinary study of disability, conducting scholarship and community-engaged service across the spectrum of disability, including advocacy, arts, culture, education, health promotion, history, policy, and technology. DHD is the administrative home of Bodies of Work, a consortium of artists and organizations in the Chicagoland area that supports the development of new creative work that illuminates the disability experience in new and unexpected ways. Our scholarship and creative activity benefit from close working relationships with UIC’s Disability Cultural Center, Institute for the Humanities, and Health Humanities faculty in the Department of Medical Education.
