For students, a University of Chicago education is transformative. Undergraduate students do more than merely acquire knowledge; they develop the critical skills necessary to examine, understand, and challenge ideas and assumptions—including their own. Graduate students develop the skills and ideas they will use to shape their own fields throughout their careers.
The Humanities Division (HD) at the University of Chicago nourishes a complex intellectual ecology that spans ancient and modern periods, includes multiple disciplinary traditions, and houses practicing arts that range from traditional media to emerging modes of creative practice. The HD actively advances transformations within and among distinct fields of knowledge, and is committed to developing modes of study and research in new fields and with new technologies.More than 200 faculty, including internationally acclaimed scholars and artists, teach and collaborate with 500 hundred doctoral students and more than 300 MA and MFA students across the Division's 13 departments, 3 committees and 19 degree programs.
By articulating a compelling vision that encompasses this range of activity, the Dean of the Division of the Humanities has both the responsibility of shaping humanistic study at the University and the opportunity to serve as a leading advocate for the Humanities across the academy, within and beyond the United States. At a historical juncture when fundamental humanistic questions (from ethics to aesthetics) have become increasingly urgent outside the Humanities, and when globalization has intensified the need for expertise across languages and cultures, the Dean of Humanities at the University of Chicago occupies an exceptional public as well as intellectual platform.
As a faculty member, the Dean must be an eminent scholar with a profile and achievements commensurate with the rank of full professor with tenure at the University of Chicago. The Dean must be deeply committed to, and curious and passionate about, all dimensions of humanistic inquiry and practice, engaging faculty, students, and alumni across fields and disciplines. The Dean must exercise exceptional judgment in hiring and promoting faculty members, realizing opportunities to promote the Division, allocating resources, and creatively facing the challenge of competing priorities and objectives. The Dean must aim to uphold the values of the University of Chicago including the practice of rigorous inquiry and free expression. The Dean's personal and institutional commitment to diversity and inclusion must be strong and visible.
