Assistant Professor of Spanish

The Emory & Henry College World Languages Department invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Spanish (tenure-track or continuing appointment dependent on qualifications)  beginning August 2023. We seek candidates to teach all level courses for the Spanish program as well as introductory classes in an additional world language such as French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, or Japanese.

The Hispanic Studies program at Emory & Henry College is among the fastest growing majors/minors on campus.  This growth is due to the rich variety of Spanish courses offered and a deep and growing relationship with both Heritage and non-Heritage students on campus. The World Languages Department is very active on campus sponsoring campus activities and collaborating with other departments. Our students engage with our many study abroad opportunities as well.

This position would allow the faculty member to design upper level courses to match their research interests.

Emory & Henry’s standard course load is 20-24 credit hours per year, with a course reduction for first-year faculty.  Engaged teaching at the undergraduate level is a faculty member’s primary responsibility at Emory & Henry.  Faculty are also expected to engage with faculty governance, participate in campus wide and departmental service, and engage in research in their field.

Essential Duties:

  1. Teach beginning Spanish 101-102 sequence and a 101-102 sequence in a second world language on a regular basis.
  2. Teach intermediate and advanced level Spanish courses on a rotating basis.
  3. Work with students to achieve the requirements for a major or minor in Spanish.
  4. Participate in department tasks such as developing assessments, participating in recruitment activities, advising, and assisting students in planning for study abroad.
  5. Contribute to the college’s strategic objectives in such areas as Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, interdisciplinarity, and retention.
  6. Plan study abroad trips with students as needed.
  7. Qualifications:

  8. Ph.D. and native or near-native fluency required in Spanish required
  9. Area of research specialization is open but related to Spanish, Hispanic Studies or other related areas
  10. Minimum of Master’s degree, 18 graduate hours or native fluency in a second world language required
  11. Native or near-native fluency required in English
  12. College teaching experience is desired.
