Assistant Teaching Professor, Technical & Professional Communication

The Department of Humanities at Michigan Technological University invites applications for a non-tenure-track Assistant Teaching Professor in Technical and Professional Communication to begin August 2023. Candidates should have a record of excellent teaching, scholarship, and professional experience in technical communication, broadly defined. We are looking for a candidate with expertise in two or more of the following areas: usability and user experience, content strategy, information design, web and interaction design, accessibility, data visualization, risk communication, and social justice approaches to technical communication. The department has a well-resourced digital media lab that includes a media studio, usability tools, and collaborative classrooms and workspaces.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

● Teach sections of undergraduate technical and professional communication courses, as well as courses in areas of expertise
● Perform department and/or university-level service.
● Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work and commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

A master’s degree in technical communication or a related field is minimally required.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

Candidates with master’s degrees should also possess at least three years of industry/professional experience in at least one of the areas specified in the job summary description.

Candidates with a Ph.D. should have a record of excellent teaching and scholarly work in technical communication.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

An earned Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree by August 1, 2023, is preferred.

Candidates with a Ph.D. should ideally possess some industry/professional experience in one of the areas specified in the job summary description.
 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Expertise in two or more of the following areas: usability and user experience, content strategy, information design, web and interaction design, accessibility, data visualization, risk communication, and social justice approaches to technical communication.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Proficiency with industry-standard software and tools, such as wireframing tools, interactive mockup tools, Adobe XD and Creative Suite, XML editors, usability and accessibility tools, and statistical/analytic tools.

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment
