Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Japanese

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Wellesley College invites applications for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowship. This two-year appointment is for a specialist in Japanese language, literature and/or culture, and will begin on July 1, 2023. The research field is open to all historical periods, but the ability to teach modern and/or contemporary topics is a requirement. The fellow will teach one course per semester for a total of four courses, and these may be existing curricular offerings, entirely new courses, or a combination of both. Particularly desirable are applicants who can cross-list courses with other departments or programs, including but not limited to Women’s and Gender Studies, Africana Studies, Comparative Literary Studies, Theatre Studies, and Cinema and Media Studies. Beyond teaching, the fellowship fosters the academic careers of scholars who have recently received Ph.D. degrees by encouraging them to pursue research while gaining mentored experience from EALC colleagues and interacting with the broader College community. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in a relevant field between September 1, 2017 and June 30, 2023. The successful candidate will have teaching experience, research promise, and enthusiasm for contributing to an academically demanding environment.

By March 1, 2023, applicants should submit a cover letter articulating their vision for the fellowship, a comprehensive curriculum vitae, a sample publication or dissertation chapter, a teaching portfolio (including a statement of teaching philosophy, a list of proposed courses, and student evaluations) and three letters of recommendation(The online application will request names/email addresses so that recommenders or dossier services may submit the letters directly). Materials should be uploaded to Wellesley’s application system, at: https://www.wellesley.edu/hr/jobseekers. If circumstances make it impossible to submit any materials through this application site, please email materials to working@wellesley.edu. The position will remain open until filled.
