Assistant Professor of Literature

Ave Maria University invites applicants for the position of assistant professor of literature beginning in Fall 2023. Candidates should have a specialization in either American or Continental European literature, with preference given to those with an additional background in creative writing. Candidates should be prepared to teach a survey in American Literature, a survey in literary theory, as well as introductory overviews of major literary genres.  Candidates should also be able to teach sections of university core classes in Rhetoric and Poetics, which surveys the works of great writers and orators and uses them as a model for the craft of writing.

Successful candidates will demonstrate excellence in teaching and scholarship.  The ideal candidate will be able to situate the study and teaching of literature within the framework of the Catholic liberal arts. Ph.D. in Literature, English, or a related field required (ABD and MFA considered).

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Applicants should submit a cover letter, which includes a statement of research interests and teaching competencies. Because the Literature Program is part of the interdisciplinary Department of Communications and Literature at Ave Maria University, which also houses programs in Writing and Modern Languages, applicants are invited to briefly mention secondary teaching interests and competencies in rhetoric, writing, screenwriting, journalism, media production, media criticism, secondary language instruction and related areas.

Applicants should also submit a curriculum vitae and a short statement relating their philosophy of teaching to the University’s Catholic mission as expressed in Ex Corde Ecclesiae.
