Yale University invites applications for the position of Director of the Center for Language Study (CLS). The CLS provides professional development opportunities for language faculty and graduate students and learning supporting services for both students and faculty. This will be year-round appointment with a preferred start of July 1, 2023.

The CLS connects language teachers, scholars, and learners of world languages, literatures, cultures, and linguistics through a variety of programs, gatherings, and innovative projects. The Center’s mission is to support and promote the study of language and culture by fostering a community of practice for language instructors and teaching fellows and by offering diverse language programs across the university.
The successful candidate will have well-articulated vision that addresses the ways in which the CLS can be a leader in the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and language teaching as well as collaborative initiatives that further the Center’s mission. The new Director of the CLS reports to the FAS Dean’s Office and will have the following required education and experience:
- Degree in SLA or related field (PhD preferred.) Areas of specialization may include applied linguistics, language education, and/or instructional digital technology and design.
- A minimum of five years of experience in higher education administration or program direction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience with team management and strong instincts for responsibilities of direct supervision.
- Significant experience teaching a language in North American higher education contexts.
- Experience with and involvement in national or international professional activities and formal publication history.
- Experience as an officer or leader in relevant professional organizations and experience developing, reviewing, or implementing multimedia instructional materials.
In addition, the successful candidate will have the following skills and abilities:
- Near-native proficiency in English and in a language taught at Yale.
- Strong background in language pedagogy and knowledge of principles of teacher training, assessment, and curriculum design.
- Significant interest and knowledge in the area of computer-assisted language learning.
- Training and experience in language assessment and/or program evaluation.
- Ability to interact effectively with a diverse faculty (senior colleagues, instructors, graduate students, administrators, Deans).
- Skills and diplomacy to guide units or faculty members through delicate interpersonal challenges
- Diplomatic approach to delicate, difficult, interpersonal and unit-wide challenges
- Flexibility, good judgment, and ability to maintain confidential information.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to create networks of people and foster collaborations.
- Interest or experience in grant writing preferred.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the strategic planning of initiatives that support the Center’s mission and advance the university’s learning goals. The Director leads the operations of the Center, directs the CLS staff, manages the facilities and the CLS budget, and oversees the English Language Program housed at the CLS. Other essential duties include:
- organizing events for language faculty and graduate students, including workshops, lectures, Brown Bags, and an Annual Instructional Innovation Workshop.
- maintaining external connections to the field through membership and participation in national and international organizations.
- maintaining a research profile.
- advising instructors and graduate students and supporting their professional development.
- consulting with individual language programs and departments and assisting in curricular developments.
- advising Yale College Dean’s Office in topics pertaining to the language requirement of Yale College; approving L5 language courses.
- hosting and/or organizing external events.
- serving on relevant committees, including search, promotion and review committees.
- directing the SLA Certificate program.
