Teaching Assistant Professor

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track, 9-month Teaching Assistant Professor position for the academic year 2023-2024. Renewal of the position is contingent on strong performance reviews and availability of funding.

The successful candidate will serve as Director of the Introductory Spanish sequence, responsible for the administrative and academic oversight of the program in collaboration with the Assistant Director, and will also teach first through third-semester courses in our introductory Spanish language sequence, and/or other courses as needed by the department, with a 3-2 teaching load. The Director also examines course articulation requests at the 100-level and participates on departmental committees on a rotating basis. The candidate will be expected to engage in research activities that enhance the department’s and campus’s reputation beyond the local community (e.g., pedagogically-focused publications and conference presentations).
Target starting date August 16, 2023. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Spanish, Language Pedagogy, Second Language Acquisition, or closely related field is required with the completion date not later than August 1, 2023. Candidates must have professional-level proficiency in Spanish and English, significant prior classroom experience teaching Spanish at the university level, and at least one year of experience with language program direction.

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate the following:
Specialization in language pedagogy or second language acquisition;
Evidence of teaching effectiveness;
Expertise in curriculum development and innovative pedagogical approaches;
Experience with designing or administrating online and hybrid/blended language courses;
Experience with student success initiatives, such as those related to heritage speakers or first-generation college students;
Experience providing professional development;
Experience with proficiency-based instruction and assessment, particularly in terms of ACTFL proficiency guidelines and their application in the classroom;
Evidence of publications and/or conference presentations related to language program direction, second language acquisition, and/or pedagogy.
