English Faculty - Fall 2023

Overview

The English faculty of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) is actively seeking applications for an anticipated full-time English teaching position for the fall 2023. The core English curriculum includes materials developed by faculty members and integrates concepts from composition, rhetoric, research, literary analysis, performance, and multi-modal literacies.  Electives are offered in topics and fields such as gender studies, film studies, poetry, graphic novels, theater, and speculative fiction, among others. The selected candidate will be responsible for curriculum delivery as well as ongoing development and revision of departmental courses.

The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10-12) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach core English courses including Literary Explorations I (composition and rhetoric); Literary Explorations II (American literature); and Literary Explorations III (foundational British literature).
  • Work toward a technology-rich, innovative classroom experience for students.
  • Guide and tutor students outside of class.
  • Participate in the team’s curriculum and assessment.
  • Participate in all department and faculty meetings, faculty development programs, and community development days.
  • Participate in non-teaching activities that support the department’s programs.
  • Participate in external English and teaching organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in English.
  • An exemplary teaching record.
  • Effective communication with students, staff, and parents.
  • Active participation in a collaborative team environment.
  • Engagement in reflective professional practice.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

Work is performed in classroom and office settings with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards.  Substantial time is spent working on a computer.  This role requires the following physical activities: speaking for extended periods of time, hearing and visual acuity, standing, sitting, and walking.

COMPENSATION:

This position is a 10-month, full time position. Salary is commensurate with training, educational preparation, and experience.  The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy offers a comprehensive benefits package including health and retirement benefits. The State Universities Retirement System (SURS) is reciprocal with other Illinois retirement systems such as the Teachers' Retirement Systems of Illinois (TRS).
