Visiting Assistant Professor in Classical Chinese and Pre-modern Literature/Culture

Swarthmore College invites applications to fill a full-time, one-year position as Visiting Assistant Professor in the Chinese Section of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.  The position will start with the Fall 2023 semester and carries a four-course teaching load (typically assigned as two courses per semester).

Research specialization and teaching assignments include Classical/Literary Chinese, Pre-modern Literature and Culture, and Advanced Mandarin Chinese Language (most likely the third year).

Qualifications

Ph.D. in some area of pre-modern Chinese literature or related cultural studies (particular areas of interest include Tang/Song Poetry and fiction or drama of the late Imperial Period); experience teaching modern Mandarin Chinese and classical/literary Chinese at a North American college or university; native or near-native proficiency in both Chinese and English.

The strongest candidates will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to creative teaching and an active research program that speaks to and motivates undergraduates from diverse backgrounds.
