Assistant Professor of Latin American Literature and Culture

The Department of Languages, Linguistics, and Comparative Literature at Florida Atlantic University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor with a specialty in modern Latin American literature and cultural studies. The position is part of a College interdisciplinary cluster hire with research-intensive focus on the transhistorical African Diaspora in the Americas. Of strong interest are specializations that include, but are not limited to: historical approaches to Afro-Latinx studies; Afro-Hispanic representations in literature and cultural productions; critical race theory; decoloniality; national identities, migrations, and multicultural interactions in the digital age; emerging technolgies and new medias; and gender and sexuality studies. Candidates with these specialties are encouraged to apply.

Typical teaching load is 2/3. The ideal candidate will bridge existing strengths in our core program areas and pursue collaborations with faculty within and outside the department. They are expected to teach Latin American literature and culture courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels (departmental MA; college PhD program in Comparative Studies) while working on interdisciplinary teams to advance a distinctive scholarly agenda with the aspiration of establishing a Center for the Study of Diaspora and Migration in the Americas. Since FAU is a Hispanic-serving institution, of particular interest are candidates whose teaching and research would engage FAU's diverse student body and communities in multicultural South Florida, especially through the department's Spanish Heritage Learners Program.

All cluster-hire candidates are expected to join current faculty who contribute to the college's overall hemispheric studies emphasis through the Americas Initiative. This initiative takes advantage of FAU's unique location at the nexus of South America, North America, and the Caribbean to bring different spaces of the western hemisphere into conversation by providing fora for scholarly discussion across disciplines in the humanities, arts, and social sciences (https://www.fau.edu/artsandletters/college-initiatives/americas-initiative). Scholars will have opportunities to mentor graduate students in multiple contexts, including their own disciplinary degree programs; our college-wide interdisciplinary PhD program; the Caribbean and Latin American Studies Certificate; the Ethnic Studies Certificate; and the Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies' MA program and undergraduate certificate. Participating faculty will also have access to the university's Peace, Justice, and Human Rights platform for additional research and programming support. Collaborative multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary extramural grant opportunities will be facilitated through internal seed grants, robust institutional grant-writing support, and post-award administrative assistance.

Minimum qualifications: PhD from accredited institution in Spanish or closely related field by the time of appointment (August 2020); superior oral and written proficiency in Spanish and English; promise of excellence in research (evidence of publication highly preferred). Experience with Hispanic-Serving Institution grants or other initiatives strongly desirable.

Applications completed and submitted in full by November 15th, 2019 will receive full consideration; position open until filled. First-round interviews will be conducted via Skype.

All applicants must apply electronically to the currently posted position (Assistant Professor) on FAU's Office of Human Resources job website (https://fau.edu/jobs) by completing the required online application and submitting the related documents.
