Job Description

The Department of English and the Core Writing Program at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) invites applicants for multiple Lecturer II/Teaching Assistant Professor positions in first-year writing to begin July 1, 2023. These are non-tenure-track, continuing positions in which faculty are eligible for promotion and in which the predominant responsibility is teaching. We are seeking candidates with knowledge and experience in teaching first-year writing, especially in working with students from diverse backgrounds and/or underrepresented groups.

The Core Writing Program takes a rhetorical approach to writing and communicating, meaning that it emphasizes writing in-context, for specific purposes and audiences. In addition, it is part of a university-wide Writing and Speaking Initiative designed to ensure that UNR students graduate with strong writing and presentation skills. The program recently received the CCCC Writing Program Certificate of Excellence.

These positions carry a 4/4 teaching load, with possibilities for course load reduction for academic advisement or certain administrative duties. There are also opportunities for off-term teaching for additional compensation. Our class sizes are small (15-19 students). Required Qualifications

  • M.A. or higher degree in English, with a focus on rhetoric and composition or a related field, by July 1, 2023. Terminal degree required for appointment as Teaching Assistant Professor

  • Candidates must possess experience working with diverse and underrepresented students at the college level

  • Successful candidates must demonstrate an ability to collaborate with others on curriculum design and implementation while supporting the university’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and social justice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Applicants with a PhD specialization in rhetoric and composition

Grants-in-aid

The University is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Department Information

The Department of English has approximately 400 majors and minors, with an increasingly diverse population of students studying writing, literature, and linguistics. The Core Writing program offers around 130 sections of first-year writing courses each semester. The curriculum emphasizes rhetorical flexibility, giving students the knowledge and experience to tailor their writing to different audiences and different contexts. We have a growing number of continuing faculty members who play roles in curriculum design, program administration, and have access to ongoing professional development opportunities.
