Visiting Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature

The Comparative Literature Program at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time non-continuing faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of one year, beginning fall semester of 2023, and will carry the rank of assistant professor.

The Comparative Literature Program at Oberlin is a vibrant, interdisciplinary program offering courses in literary and cultural theory, literary translation and translation theory, and comparative courses taught primarily in English. Majors take additional courses in literature, arts, other media, and interpretation from cooperating departments in culture, literature, and language. The Program offers a major, a minor, and a minor in Literary Translation. The incumbent will teach a total of five courses in the general area of comparative literature, with emphasis on cultural and literary theory, as well as translation/ translation theory. One of these courses will be an introduction to Comparative Literature, which is required of all majors. The cultural area and language(s) of specialty of the incumbent are open, with some preference given to candidates who work in at least one non-European culture/language. Particularly desirable cultural areas include (but are not limited to): Russian/ Slavic languages and literatures; East Asian studies; South Asian literatures; African/ African Diaspora literatures; World literature; Anglophone and World modernism. Comparatists with other areas of specialty are also encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:

Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D degree in Comparative Literature (in hand or expected by first semester of academic year 2023). Candidates with a degree in other language/ literature departments will be considered if they demonstrate solid training and expertise in comparative methods as well as ability to teach an introductory course to Comparative Literature. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.
