The American Association of Teachers of Italian seeks qualified applicants for the position of Executive Director.

The Position of Executive Director

As the AATI continues to grow and expand, the Executive Committee has decided to hire an Executive Director, who will help continue this forward-moving trajectory. This is an exciting time to be a part of the AATI, as it embarks on its second centennial with innovative programming, a more diverse membership, and ever-increasing opportunities for Italian educators around the globe.

The Executive Director is the chief administrative officer of the Association and manages its official business, maintains the annual calendar, and manages the AATI's public presence and image. The AATI seeks an Executive Director who will enhance the Association's current mission and vision, while helping to shape the next, and who will raise its international profile. The Executive Director works closely with the Treasurer to manage the finances of the Association, including overseeing expenditures, investments, taxes, and the budget committee. The Executive Director is a non-voting, ex-officio member of the Executive Committee. This is a remote position with flexible hours, some of which will occur during the weekends as we near specific online events and/or annual conferences. The position will begin as a part-time one, with limited responsibilities to be determined, in consultation with the President of the AATI. The Executive Committee expects that the position will grow into a full-time one as Association membership  increases.

Responsibilities: 

  • Administer the day-to-day business, communications, and external image of the AATI.
  • Maintain Association's adherence to the By-Laws
  • Maintain the Association's Calendar
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of various committee chairs and keep them on task and on schedule
  • Establish and maintain relations with other learned societies
  • Assist in grant writing for the Association
  • Maintain financial records in collaboration with the Association's Treasurer
  • Work with various officers to maintain and move the Association's mission and vision forward
  • Schedule and organize all EC and officer meetings in consultation with the President and Secretary
  • Collaborate with the editor and The University of Illinois Press on the managerial tasks of Italica, as needed
  • Oversee and execute fundraising initiatives
  • Maintain membership databases for internal and external uses in collaboration with the officers
  • Attend conferences and participate at EC meetings providing reports at the beginning

Qualifications:

The AATI seeks an experienced, vision-centered leader with commitment and vision to serve as its Executive Director. The following is a broad list of skills and attributes important for success in this role:

  • Basic understanding of how academic and/or non-profit organizations work
  • Experience working in multicultural communities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Italian
  • Computer / digital skills:
  • Social media and website updates as needed (will receive training)
  • Office software, including spreadsheet set-up and maintenance, and Adobe Acrobat Reader<
  • Graphic design software knowledge (Photoshop or Canva) is a plus
  • Experience with financial management software and PayPal, also a plus
  • Some experience with event planning
  • Managerial competency: attention to detail, demonstrated excellent work ethic, and organizational skills
  • Some grant writing experience
  • MA required; PhD preferred

Terms and Compensation: The Executive Director will be an independent contractor with an initial 3-year term (subject to annual review) and opportunities for renewal and growth into a full-time position. The annual salary is $20,000; $25,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

  • Medical and retirement benefits are not offered with this position.

  • Candidate must be located in the United States for at a minimum of 9 months per calendar year.
  • Travel, hotel, and registration costs for required conference attendance as a representative of the organization.
