Soka University of America, Aliso Viejo, California, invites applications to fill a full-time position as Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish to teach in its Language and Culture Program for one year (September 2023 to May 2024). Responsibilities include teaching of five undergraduate courses in Spanish Language and Culture, including intermediate-level courses. The successful candidate will demonstrate their ability to engage students in small classroom settings.
SUA is a selective four-year institution offering a challenging B.A. in the liberal arts with a mission to foster a steady stream of global citizens committed to living a contributive life. The university promotes integrated education and aims to cultivate close intellectual relations between faculty and students through mentorship. Students have a choice of concentrations—Environmental Studies, Humanities, International Studies, Life Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. Faculty are encouraged to incorporate cross-disciplinary perspectives into their courses, and we invite our candidates to consider how they might do so. While at SUA, each student is required to take at least one mathematics course, meant to expose students to the true nature of mathematical inquiry.
Candidates should demonstrate responsiveness toward and understanding of diverse student backgrounds, especially with regard to socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, culture, ability/disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity and have a willingness to facilitate the university’s mission to develop global citizens.
The successful candidate must have:
- Ph.D. in a relevant field
- Native or near-native competence in oral/written Spanish.
- Experience teaching Spanish as a foreign language at the college level.
- Ability to develop and teach a variety of intermediate-level topical courses in Spanish Language and Culture.
Candidates should have:
- Knowledge and experience implementing varied approaches to language learning
- Experience teaching Spanish undergraduate courses at all levels.
Benefits / Salary:
Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. The Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish Language and Culture salary range is $68,000 - $78,000. All full-time faculty members are eligible for medical, dental, vision, and retirement benefits.
