French Visiting Assistant Professor

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures (DMLL) in the College of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor of French starting Fall 2023. 

Expectations include teaching two courses per semester in French language, literature, and culture at the undergraduate level, departmental and university service, and contributions to the Program in French. Contributions to curricular development are encouraged, and excellence in teaching is expected. The successful candidate should be capable of teaching in both English and French and should have near-native fluency in both languages.

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures is the multicultural epicenter of the university. As a collective, it represents the traditions and languages of almost every corner of the planet: Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America.

DMLL is a vibrant and research-oriented department. It offers ten language disciplines of study, with majors or minors in French, German, Japanese Studies, and Spanish. In addition, coursework or a minor is available in Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian. The department has also developed specialized language courses for the professions: health, business, law, engineering, and diplomacy. The department offers lead study-abroad programs in Cuba, France, Japan, Jordan, Italy, Spain, and Taiwan. DMLL is associated with interdisciplinary programs in World Literature, Women’s and Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, and International Studies.

Case Western Reserve University is located in the University Circle cultural district of Cleveland, Ohio, home of the nationally top-ranked Cleveland Clinic, the internationally famous Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Cleveland Institute of Art. Within a five-mile radius from CWRU are the nation’s second-largest theater district, several professional sports teams, a wide range of musical, artistic, and culinary venues, recreational opportunities, and numerous diverse communities in which to live.

The College of Arts and Sciences houses educational and research programs in the arts, humanities, social sciences, physical and biological sciences, and mathematical sciences. The College comprises 21 academic departments, 35 interdisciplinary programs and centers, and 270 faculty members. Students are encouraged to conduct research in their chosen or related fields within the College as well as in collaboration with nearby cultural institutions. 

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in French and/or French Studies, Comparative Literature, or Cultural Studies with a focus on French is required. The department welcomes interdisciplinary approaches, such as film studies.

b) How they value diversity, equity, and inclusion within their research and discipline(s) and how their own scholarly work might contribute to structural justice inside and outside institutions of higher learning. This statement should also suggest how the candidate’s work, while as a member of Case Western Reserve University, will contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion and how moving forward they intend to foster a culture of diversity, pluralism, and individual difference.
