The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Swarthmore College invites applications for a full-time, visiting assistant professor position in German Studies beginning in August 2023. This is a non-tenure track 3-year position. Applicants should have a specialization in German-language literature and culture and a commitment to teaching at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum. Swarthmore’s German Studies program is small but vigorous, with both major and minor tracks and courses contributing to Film and Media Studies; Global Studies; Gender & Sexuality Studies; Comparative Literature. Teaching load is four classroom courses per year as well as co-curricular duties in support of the academic program. We seek candidates capable of teaching the full range of German language and culture courses, in addition to one annual English-language course in the candidate’s research specialty that would appeal to a broader student demographic (interdisciplinary connections to STEM and Social Sciences, e.g. through Medical Humanities, are especially encouraged).
German Studies is housed in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, which has six language programs with 1-4 tenure lines and 1-2 lecturers each. Classes for majors are small, students are motivated, and the opportunities for collaboration with colleagues and students are real and abundant.
