Japanese Language and Culture


The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track, face-to-face lecture position beginning Fall 2023. The position is on a 9-month fixed-term contract, renewable annually at the discretion of the department head.

The full-time teaching load is typically four courses per semester. This position will be primarily responsible for teaching all levels of Japanese courses. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications. This position includes benefits. The department seeks to attract a culturally and academically diverse faculty. Contingent upon available funding.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in Japanese language and literature or Japanese language and culture or Applied Linguistics with a specialization in Japanese or at least 18 graduate credit hours in Japanese coursework. 
  • Native or near-native language skills in speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing in both Japanese and English. 
  • All qualifying degrees or credit hours must be completed by August 1, 2023.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to candidates who: (1) have experience in teaching all levels of Japanese and have an interest in developing the Japanese Studies curriculum; (2) have experience and/or strong interest in developing extra- and co-curricular activities that will contribute to the growth of the Japanese Studies program; (3) have experience in integrating innovative, internet-based activities(including online presentations, assignments, quizzes, and tests) into their face-to-face teaching; (4) demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in curriculum development; (5) will contribute to service, especially in program and Department outreach and recruitment; (6) will participate in interdisciplinary collaborations, especially with the International and Global Studies Program, home of the major-level concentration in Asian Studies. 
  • A PhD in Japanese language and culture or Japanese Studies is highly desirable.
