UCC wishes to appoint an outstanding scholar who will bring leadership and an innovative vision to German Studies. Reporting to the Head of School/College, the successful candidate will significantly enhance the profile of the subject at national and international level. They will have expertise in one or more areas of German Studies, hold a PhD in German or a relevant area, and have native or near-native competence in German. The successful appointee to this role will be a dynamic and forward-thinking senior Germanist whose impact will extend beyond the Department. They will provide leadership to the discipline and will capitalise on opportunities to grow student numbers and will lead the extension of the versatile teaching offerings (language, literature, film, culture and linguistics) across the full range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the discipline and the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures [SLLC]. The research profile of the successful appointee will have a transdisciplinary reach so as to actively engage with Research Clusters in the School’s Centre for Advanced Study in Languages and Cultures [CASiLaC], and in complementary signature areas of research in UCC Futures, including the Radical Humanities Laboratory and Collective Social Futures.

Duties of the Post: In accordance with the University’s strategic objective as a research-led institution, the duties of all academic staff will include research, research-led teaching and contributions to the University, the discipline and the community. The academic staff member shall teach and examine, undertake administrative duties and carry out other duties appropriate to the post under the general direction of the Head of the School/College. The appointee will assume the role of Head of Department on commencement.

Information on the Department of German

The Department of German is one of five constituent Departments within the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. The Department contributes to a range of both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including the BA, BA International, BA World Languages, BSc International Business with Languages, and BEd Gaeilge where German is available to both ab initio and non-ab initio students. At postgraduate level, programmes include the MA Applied Linguistics, MA Global Cultures and Languages and the MA Translation Studies, and staff members supervise PhD students across a range of areas of expertise. Research spans various areas of German/Literary/Cultural Studies and Linguistics Studies, with staff members engaged in national and international collaborations, while also contributing to the work of a range of national and international associations. The Department contributes substantially to the work of the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures [SLLC], including interdisciplinary modules offered by the School, and the School’s research centre for Advanced Study in Languages and Cultures [CASiLaC], which includes various interdisciplinary research clusters. Appointment may be made on the Professor (Scale 2) Salary Scale: €111,794- €131,296 (Scale B) / €106,204 - €124,733 (Scale A). Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy
