Director, International Education

The Director of International Education provides strategic leadership that implements innovative strategies to support, improve, and strengthen the Office of International Education in order to provide exceptional programs and services. This position is responsible for developing and managing various semester-long and short-term study abroad programs for Wittenberg's students.  This position provides support and advising services to international students to assist in complying with federal regulations governing their legal status in the US and academic success on Wittenberg's campus. The incumbent will teach up to 12 academic credits annually. This is a full-time, exempt-level position reporting to the Provost. 
 

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  1. Maintain and develop relationships with various semester-long and short-term (including summer) study abroad programs.
  2. Promote and recruit students and faculty members for participation in various study abroad programs (including Wittenberg-sponsored and consort programs). 
  3. Communicate on behalf of the University with federal agencies including the US citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Department of State, Department of Labor, Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), and others as appropriate and necessary in keeping with the NAFSA Statement of Professional Competencies for International Educators.
  4. Serve as the university Primary Designated School Official responsible for compliance within the SEVIS F-1 and J-1 programs.
  5. Manage student records as it pertains to immigration services, regulations, the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) reporting and compliance issues, etc. 
  6. Collaborate with various divisions on campus (Enrollment Management and Student Development) to coordinate international student arrivals, registration, and orientation that coincide with University policies and procedures, but which address issues of concern to new students from outside the United States.
  7. Interpret and advise the President, Provost and other members of the senior leadership team regarding applicable rules, policies, contracts, crises, and other areas related to international situations and best practices. 
  8. Assist the Office of University Communications in designing and implementing marketing, branding, and public relations for international education on and off campus. 
  9. Participate in assessment of student learning related to study away and international experiential learning.
  10. Serve as ex-officio member of the International and Field Studies committee and as a member of the President's Council for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  11. Teach up to 12 credits annually within the undergraduate curriculum (German preferred).
  12. Perform other relevant duties as assigned such as special projects, programs, developmental activities, etc.

Requirements:

Requirements include:

  • A master's degree is required; a PhD/doctorate is preferred.
  • One to three years relevant experience working in international education is required.
  • Experience with study abroad programs and establishing international partnerships at a regionally accredited college or university required.
  • Experience with international recruitment and international university-sponsored travel at a regionally accredited college or university required.
  • Some teaching experience required, preferred experience teaching German language and/or culture.
  • Competency and experience using Microsoft Office software, specifically proficient in the use of Excel, Publisher, Outlook, and PowerPoint with the ability and desire to learn additional software applications as necessary.
  • Ability to remain stationary for more than 50% of the work day.
  • Occasional travel (domestic and international) is required
  • Some evening and weekend work is required.


As the Primary Designated School Official (DSO), federal law requires that the individual be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
