English Instructor

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an exceptional English instructor who can help advanced high school students achieve a deeper understanding of language and literature. Applicants should have a Master’s degree, PhD preferred, in English or related field, and experience teaching literature and writing at college or advanced high school levels. Interest in teaching virtual synchronous courses is a plus. Field of expertise is open, and we especially welcome applications from candidates with interests or teaching experience in creative writing (poetry), British literature, and global or multi-ethnic literature.

Courses at GSSM are modeled on college-level class schedules and teaching environments. The successful candidate will teach courses such as junior English, a literature-based composition and rhetoric course, and upper-level special topics courses in areas of the candidate’s expertise and interest. Special topics courses at GSSM have included world literature, Shakespeare, African-American literature, gender studies, film, drama, nature writing, science fiction, philosophy, and creative writing courses in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

GSSM is a public, tuition-free residential school for motivated and talented 11th and 12th graders from across South Carolina. It is recognized among the top public high schools in the nation. Position begins August 2020. This is a full-time (10-month) teaching position, with benefits through the State of South Carolina. Salary is competitive and commensurate with credentials, experience, and unique capabilities. Committee meetings, student activity advising, and occasional evening/weekend commitments are a regular part of faculty responsibilities. A public school teaching certificate is not required.
