Assistant Professor, Critical Race Studies and African American Literature

The Department of English and Comparative Literature (ECL) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Critical Race Studies and African American Literature. We seek a candidate with strong scholarly potential whose research program is focused on the intersections of African American literature and critical thought on race (theoretical and/or philosophical), as well as demonstrated interests in one or more related subfields, such as, but not limited to, queer of color critique, black feminism/womanism, gender and sexuality studies, film studies, visual culture, radical social movements, ecocriticism, and black expressive cultural practices. The appointment is at the rank of Assistant Professor with a teaching load of two courses per semester (2/2); faculty members teach one graduate course every two years. The successful candidate can expect to design a range of courses for undergraduate and graduate students, including survey courses, special topics, and research seminars. Faculty at all levels advise and mentor students, oversee independent research projects, engage in an appropriate amount of service, and participate actively in the intellectual life of the Department and the University.

The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2020. The annual salary is

$68,000.

 

Required qualifications: Ph.D. in English or related field (doctorate must be in hand by date of appointment) and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in research and teaching.
