Assistant Professor of Spanish

The Austin College Department of Classical and Modern Languages invites applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Spanish. Candidates must have PhD in Spanish in hand before the position begins in August 2024.

Field of specialization is open. Research and teaching in Latin American literature and culture is preferred. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. Preference given to areas of specialization focused on historically marginalized racial, ethnic, gender, indigenous, and socio-economic groups. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to, Caribbean studies, Southern Cone studies, Andean studies, Afro-Latinidad, Gender studies, Queer studies, U.S. Latinx, Borderlands studies, and Transatlantic studies.

Candidates must demonstrate native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English. Commitment to and evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching is especially important. The position requires teaching introductory to upper-level undergraduate language, literature, and culture courses. The teaching load is three courses every fall and spring semester, a January Term course every other year, and directorship of the Spanish Language House on a rotating basis. Teaching responsibilities also include the First Year Seminar course in English every four years. Experience beyond the classroom in student mentoring, interdisciplinary collaborations, academic or cultural events, and community-engaged learning is desirable.

The successful candidate will have strong commitments to innovative teaching in a liberal arts environment and to encouraging diversity in their classroom, in their pedagogy, and in their approach to Hispanic language, literature and culture. Each member of the Austin College community is responsible for creating and maintaining a culture of inclusion that engages students and valorizes each other’s contribution to our shared educational mission. The successful candidate will show how their teaching and research agenda relate to the Austin College liberal arts curriculum, including the new general degree requirements (Systems of Power, Privilege, and Inequality; Global Diversity) and the writing curriculum.
