The French and Francophone Section of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Swarthmore College invites applications for one position at the level of Visiting Assistant Professor of French.

A PhD in French Studies with a specialization in 18th-19th centuries at the time of appointment is required. Particularly welcome will be a candidate with a secondary interest in environmental studies, queer studies or medical humanities.

The successful candidate will teach two courses a semester in French at all levels in a student-centered environment, and will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to French language teaching that speaks to and motivates undergraduates from diverse backgrounds.

This position is outside the tenure stream and will begin in Fall 2020. Benefits package and salary competitive.


Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate-level French is required as well as native or near-native fluency in French and English. A knowledge of proficiency-based assessment, ACTFL standards and OPI scales are required. Also required are language learning assessment skills and proficiency in the use of technologies for the language classroom.
