Assistant or Associate Professor of Rhetoric & Writing

The Department of Rhetoric & Writing at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a tenured Associate Professor or an advanced tenure-track Assistant Professor with scholarly expertise in rhetoric and writing studies and experience in writing program administration to begin in Fall of academic year 2024-2025. We seek a dedicated rhetoric and writing studies scholar interested in teaching in our undergraduate and graduate programs and in serving one to two terms as director of our graduate teacher training seminar, RHE 398T, a 4-year rotating position serving the department’s core mission.

The RHE 398T seminar runs each fall semester with roughly 20 graduate instructors enrolled. The RHE 398t director’s primary responsibilities include orienting new graduate instructors just prior to the semester’s start, preparing them to teach our core writing course, and ensuring that they have the pedagogical foundation necessary to support their future instructional opportunities. The seminar and the director are supported by a team of engaged faculty and graduate students involved in the development and implementation of our lower-division curriculum.

Position expectations include maintaining an active research agenda, teaching courses in our undergraduate and graduate curriculums, directing dissertations, area exams, and honors theses, and engaging in the service missions of the Department, the College, and the University.

The selected candidate will have the opportunity to design and teach an array of courses that contribute to the undergraduate major in Rhetoric and Writing and the Ph.D. concentration in Rhetoric —all with the support of the department’s two nationally acclaimed sub-units: the University Writing Center and the Digital Writing and Research Lab (DWRL). The DRWL boasts a dynamic, collegial, nationally and internationally recognized faculty with interests in rhetorical history and theory; cultural and feminist rhetorics; composition theory and pedagogy; digital writing and public rhetoric; multi-modal and computational rhetorics; empirical research; environmental and social movements; and rhetoric and poetics.


Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Writing or related field. Preferred qualifications include an active research agenda in rhetoric and writing studies, a scholarly publication record commensurate with rank, evidence of teaching excellence, and experience (broadly construed) with writing program administration.
