Assistant Professor of English Language and Literature

The Smith College English Department invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in creative writing, with a specialty in fiction writing, at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2024.  Courses to be taught include an introductory workshop in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, and intermediate and advanced fiction workshops.  We welcome candidates working in speculative or other forms of genre fiction.  Creative writing is one of two emphases or tracks available in the English major, and we hope that the person who fills this position will assume, over time, a significant role in shaping our creative writing track.  The College’s standard teaching load is 2/2 plus, with the plus defined as advising theses or other independent projects.

Applicants should have an MFA or equivalent terminal degree in creative writing.  We expect them to have as well a strong record of publication along with significant teaching experience and a clear pedagogical vision.

Submit applications with a cover letter, CV, three confidential letters of recommendation, and a statement that addresses the candidate’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in their teaching (see link).  Long-listed applicants will be asked for additional materials.  The review of applications will begin on October 1, and we expect to conduct a first round of interviews over Zoom in December.

As set forth in our mission and values, Smith College is committed to promoting a culture of equity and inclusion among students, staff and faculty.  The College will not discriminate in employment on the basis of age, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, creed, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, genetic information, age, veteran status, physical or mental disability, or any other classification protected by law. Smith College is an equal opportunity employer and complies with all state and federal laws that prohibit discrimination.
