Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies

Lawrence University of Wisconsin invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professorship specializing in 20th and 21st-century French language, culture, and literature. Lawrence is a selective undergraduate liberal arts college and conservatory of music located in Appleton, WI. Competitive candidates for this appointment will be committed to teaching excellence and undergraduate advising, and should demonstrate evidence of an active and ongoing research agenda.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching French language, culture, and literature courses from introductory through advanced levels and will also demonstrate the interest and ability to teach within an interdisciplinary generalist curriculum and hold a strong secondary specialization in Gender Studies. Expertise in WWI, WWII, Occupied France, or French Feminist Theory is especially desirable. Candidates specializing in these fields in both French and global francophone contexts are encouraged to apply. Native or near-native fluency in French and English is required. This is a full-time tenure-track appointment to begin on September 1, 2024. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in French Studies or closely related field prior appointment (9/1/24); ABD is acceptable for selection.

The French and Francophone Studies department offers a full major in literature and cultural studies and provides courses that meet Lawrence’s intermediate language competency requirement. The successful candidate will teach a full-time load of six courses per year, two per 10-week term, ranging from introductory French language and culture to advanced literary and cultural studies seminars in French. They will lead and supervise occasional independent study and senior capstone projects. They will also contribute regularly to our Gender Studies Program (about one core course per year), as well as Lawrence’s signature multidisciplinary First-Year Studies program. Interest in leading our biennial trimester program in Dakar, Senegal is highly desirable.
