The English Department at New York University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Environmental Literary Studies/ Environmental Humanities, effective September 1st, 2024, pending administrative and budgetary approval. The successful candidate will have a record of excellence in teaching and research and a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion. The Ph.D. must be in hand by September 1, 2024.

We seek applications from emerging literary scholars who research and teach in the interdisciplinary field of environmental humanities, from any of a broad range of perspectives, including (but not limited to): urban ecologies; environmental justice; science and technology studies; multi-species and extinction studies; Anthropocene Studies; modernist ecologies; literature of climate crisis; environmental history; queer ecologies. Applicants may specialize in one particular region within a global framework, or work comparatively across regional or national literatures. We also welcome applications from candidates who demonstrate commitment to public-facing research and teaching and/or creative practice.

In addition to undergraduate and graduate courses related to their area of specialization, the successful candidate will teach courses on literary history and literary analysis for the undergraduate major in English or in the College of Arts and Science Core Curriculum, and will likely contribute to the new undergraduate minor in Environmental Humanities. This position is part of a multi-departmental cluster hire in “Transforming Ecologies in Urban Environments,” which includes the departments of English, Biology, and Environmental Studies. A primary aim of the cluster is to create a network for scholars at NYU working on environmental studies across a range of disciplines. The search committee is especially interested to hear from candidates who will bring to their research and teaching the diverse perspectives that come from non-traditional educational backgrounds or an understanding of those under-represented in higher education. In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $85,000 - $135,000.
