Lecturer in Creative Writing/Literary Publishing

The Department of English Language and Literature in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan seeks applicants with a Ph.D. or M.F.A. for a full-time new Lecturer III position in Creative Writing/Literary Publishing on a continuing 12-month appointment beginning Fall 2024. This is a non-tenure track position.

Duties and responsibilities for this Lecturer III position are expected to include teaching responsibilities for two courses per term, with a course in creative writing (fiction and nonfiction) and a publishing and editing practicum course. This Lecturer III will also serve as managing editor of Michigan Quarterly Review in an associated staff position. A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a Lecturer III in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three courses per semester, or the equivalent in administrative and/or service duties. With teaching two courses per semester representing 66.67% appointment effort, and the associated staff role representing 33.33% appointment effort, these combined roles total 100% appointment effort.  

Qualified candidates will have a Ph.D. or MFA in a related field and have extensive background in teaching, publishing, and creative writing at undergraduate and/or graduate levels, and a range of instructional expertise; three or more years of editorial experience (as a developmental editor, including substantive line-level editing; managing editor; and/or copyeditor), at a nationally recognized literary publisher or magazine; and a record of achievement in professional research and/or creative activities in publishing, including literary magazine, books, and/or book arts. Excellence in teaching and instructional service will be the principal criteria used to select the successful candidate.
