Assistant Professor in Writing and Rhetoric studies

The Department of English at the University of Nevada, Reno, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in writing and rhetoric studies to begin July 1, 2020. The desired areas of specialization include digital rhetoric, multi modal composition, and public theory.  The successful candidate will teach a 2-2 course load that includes both first-year writing courses and graduate courses. In addition, the candidate will actively contribute to an evolving undergraduate curriculum in public and professional writing as well as a graduate emphasis in public engagement.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition or closely related discipline by July 1, 2020, demonstrate a record of effective teaching, and exhibit potential for substantial peer-reviewed publications commensurate with the expectations of a Research 1 university.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working on specific projects with and between diverse communities and/or professional and public-facing organizations is preferred.  Preference will be given to candidates whose research intersects with two or more of these areas and to candidates whose research articulates a relationship between identity markers—race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, etc.—and digital platforms of various sorts.

The Department of English has well over 400 majors and minors, with an increasingly diverse population of students studying writing, literature and linguistics. Our faculty teach a wide range of courses which draw on a multitude of critical, rhetorical and linguistic perspectives. We have an MA and PhD emphases in rhetoric and writing studies as well as an interdisciplinary MA emphasis in public engagement. Many of our students take a certificate in the Gender, Race, and Identity (GRI) program. Faculty are encouraged to collaborate with GRI, Core Humanities, and the Ozman Global Studies Institute. In addition, the Rhetoric and Composition faculty work closely with the Core Writing Program and other areas of the President’s initiative in Writing and Speaking.

Total Compensation

The total compensation package includes a negotiable competitive salary, moving allowance (if applicable), a rich retirement plan, health insurance options that include dental and vision, life insurance, long-term disability, thirty (30) days of sick leave provided upon start date and two (2) days of sick leave accrued per full month after the first year of service, two (2) days of annual leave accrued each full month, along with many other benefits.
