The Department of World Languages & Cultures at the University of Utah invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured position in Classics at any rank to begin in Fall 2024 (contract begins July 1). The Classics program in the Department offers majors in Latin and Ancient Greek, as well as a “Classical Civilization” minor.
We seek a dynamic scholar with an active research agenda and demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will have broad expertise in the ancient Mediterranean world and classical literatures and cultures. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in games studies and the reception of the Classics in video games (for possible collaboration with the nationally ranked Entertainment Arts and Engineering major); or with a primary specialization in the intersection and reception of ancient Greco-Roman cultures with the Islamic or Buddhist worlds; or in medical humanities. We also welcome other fields of specialization, such as performance studies, visual studies, ecocriticism, gender studies, and popular culture.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Classics, Comparative Literature, or a related field in hand by the time of appointment. The teaching load is two courses per semester (2-2), encompassing both undergraduate and graduate levels. Service commensurate with appointment rank is expected.
The successful applicant will be able to teach both Latin and Greek at any level, as well as courses such as Classical Mythology, the Greeks, the Romans, Ancient Greece and Rome in the Cinema, Greek Drama, Epic Poetry, Ancient Sports, and Women in Ancient Greece and Rome. New class topics can be created to best fit the candidate’s expertise and enthusiasms.
From senior applicants, we seek an extraordinarily innovative and distinguished research profile, alongside a record of sterling academic leadership and service, as expected for a tenured position hire.
Complete applications will include a letter of application, a CV, a writing sample of no more than 20 pages, a teaching philosophy, a diversity statement, and three letters of recommendation. All materials should be submitted by October 31st. Questions may be addressed to Prof. Margaret Toscano, chair of the search committee (margaret.toscano@utah.edu).
