Assistant Professor in Afro Latin American Studies

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California Davis invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Afro-Latin American Studies appointment effective 7/1/2024. The expected salary range is $91,000 to $111,000, commensurate with experience. Research should focus on Afro-Latin American literatures and cultures. A focus on decolonial studies, epistemologies of the South, and/or the study of racial inequality in Latin America is highly desirable. We welcome, but do not require, interests in gender and sexuality studies, Afro-diasporic studies, and social justice.

The appointee must possess evidence of scholarly promise and successful teaching experience in both literature and cultural studies courses. The appointee is expected to teach a broad range of graduate and undergraduate courses in Latin American studies. We favor teaching and research interests that challenge established boundaries, periods, and regions within the Spanish-speaking world. The successful candidate must be capable of mentoring undergraduate and graduate students who are working on qualifying exams, honors theses, and doctoral dissertations. Applicants will be able to contribute to the shared governance and intellectual life of the department and the larger UC Davis community.

Applicants should possess native or near-native fluency in Spanish and have experience teaching upper division courses. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional promise as a scholar and teacher. A PhD in Spanish and/or related field is required prior to the first day of classes on September 25, 2024.

For full consideration, applications should be received by November 1, 2023.  Questions may be addressed to Professor Ana Peluffo, Chair of the Search Committee at aopeluffo@ucdavis.edu

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment, UC Davis conducts a reference check on all first-choice candidates for Academic Senate Assistant Professor or Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment, Steps 4, 5, or 6, or Acting Professor of Law positions. The reference check involves contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Davis requires all applicants for any open search for Assistant Professor to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If an applicant does not include the signed authorization with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists considered for Academic Senate Assistant Professor or Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment, Steps 4, 5, or 6, or Acting Professor of Law positions will be subject to reference checks.
