Position Description
The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Washington and Lee University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chinese, beginning July 1, 2024. We seek outstanding candidates who can contribute to our undergraduate curriculum through teaching a broad range of Chinese language courses and content courses on pre-modern China and whose areas of expertise will complement existing departmental and university-wide strengths in Chinese studies. While we are particularly interested in candidates who specialize in pre-modern Chinese literature and culture, we welcome applications from candidates of all disciplines whose research interests are in pre-modern Chinese studies. Since effective language teaching is crucial to the department, candidates who specialize in Chinese linguistics, second-language acquisition with a Chinese focus, or Chinese language pedagogy are also welcome to apply.
Founded in 1749 and located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Washington and Lee University offers a unique academic setting of arts and sciences, commerce and law, and is consistently ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges.
W&L promotes a dynamic and inclusive environment that allows students and employees of multiple backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives to learn, work, and thrive together. Successful candidates will contribute to that environment and exhibit potential for excellence in teaching and for vigorous scholarship. In keeping with the University Strategic Plan, we welcome applications from underrepresented minority candidates and members of other communities that are traditionally underrepresented in academia.
Qualifications
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand (or expected by July 1, 2024), native or near-native fluency in both standard Mandarin and English, ability to teach Chinese language courses at all levels as well as content courses in English on pre-modern Chinese literature, culture or other related fields, and demonstrated success in teaching at the college level in the U.S. Evidence of an active research agenda and a strong commitment to innovative teaching and professional development is preferred.
Application Instructions
Applications should include a cover letter (with a web-accessible link to a 20-minute video of Chinese language teaching demo), a curriculum vitae, a statement on teaching philosophy and professional goals, two sample syllabi (one for a content course and one for a Chinese language course), and three confidential letters of recommendation.
Please submit your application at: http://apply.interfolio.com/131957.
