Duties:
Applicants should be generalists who have the interest and ability to teach foundational literary studies in a global context incorporating theoretical approaches to race, class, and gender in pre-modern periods, genres, and regions. The primary focus of this position is teaching the Literary Foundations course at the BA and BFA levels (which surveys foundational works of literature spanning a wide range of pre-modern periods, genres, and world regions in order to familiarize students with broad principles in literary and cultural history. Works studied may include ancient Greek and other pre-modern epic, lyric, and drama along with cognate and contrasting traditions). This position is located at the Boston campus teaching in-person classes, though there may be opportunities to teach undergraduate and graduate classes online. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, student mentorship, and serving on other department and college committees.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a PhD or ABD status (completion expected by August 22nd, 2024) in literature (or a related field) focusing on pre-modern periods and world regions. The successful candidate will have a publication record, an active research agenda, and college-level teaching experience.
Interested applicants must complete an online application form and submit a 2-3 page cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information for three references (references will not be contacted until after the first round of interviews upon applicants' written approval). The cover letter should address three items: the candidate's literary scholarship and publications; the candidate's teaching philosophy; and the candidate's approach to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility.
Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2023, and priority will be given to applications submitted prior to that date. The position will remain open until filled.
Please note, in the job application where there is the "CV/Cover Letter/ Additional Documents" drop box, you must include all of the required materials listed above. You can upload each document separately or as a combined PDF. Your application will not be complete without these documents.
