The Department of Writing, Literature and Publishing invites applications for an open rank tenure-line position in Creative Writing. This is a full-time faculty position either at the tenure-track assistant rank or tenured associate or full professor rank (open rank). Tenure transfer at the associate or full professor rank is possible if the candidate has already earned tenure and is at that rank at a comparable institution. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through teaching, other forms of engagement with students outside of the classroom, creative work, and service activities. The appointment begins August 22, 2024 with a mandatory 2-day orientation August 22 & 23, 2024.

The Department of Writing, Literature and Publishing is a vibrant community of scholars, writers, publishers, and designers with over 100 full- and part-time faculty members, 500 undergraduate majors in four different degree programs, and nearly 400 graduate students in its two MFA programs and in the Publishing MA program.


Primary teaching duties include creative writing and literature courses. This position is located at the Boston campus teaching in-person classes, though there may be opportunities to teach undergraduate and graduate classes online. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, student mentorship, assisting in the graduate admission process, and serving on other department and college committees.

The ideal candidate will be a versatile writer of poetry, nonfiction, and/or fiction with a significant and active record of publication in nationally or internationally recognized venues in at least two genres (e.g. fiction and non-fiction, poetry and fiction, etc.). Candidates should have an MFA in creative writing, a terminal degree in a related field, or substantial publications equivalent to a terminal degree. Published writing in multiple genres and college teaching experience is required. Candidates whose work explicitly focuses on issues of racial, cultural, sexual, gendered, economic, or religious difference are encouraged to apply.

Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds. A strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education beyond the classroom is essential. Candidates should be able to address issues of race and representation in all of their courses. Our ideal candidates will also possess a keen and developed awareness of the issues around inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility. The candidate should be able to demonstrate culturally responsive writing pedagogies and approaches, and possess a fluid overall pedagogy that is able to adapt and expand as the cultural conversation around representation, privilege-based difference, and inclusive excellence continues to evolve.
