The Department of Writing, Literature & Publishing at Emerson College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of literature with a focus on the global traditions of the novel. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through teaching, other forms of engagement with students outside of the classroom, scholarship and service activities. The appointment begins August 22, 2024 with a mandatory 2-day orientation August 22 & 23, 2024.

The Department of Writing, Literature and Publishing is a vibrant community of scholars, writers, publishers, and designers with over 100 full- and part-time faculty members, 500 undergraduate majors in four different degree programs, and nearly 400 graduate students in its two MFA programs and in the Publishing MA program.

Duties:

The candidate will be expected to teach courses that focus on the global traditions of the novel. Successful candidates should also possess an active research portfolio, with the strong potential for future scholarly growth. This position is located at the Boston campus teaching in-person classes, though there may be opportunities to teach undergraduate and graduate classes online. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, student mentorship, and serving on other department and college committees.

Qualifications:
By the start date, candidates must have a PhD in Literature (such as English literature, comparative literature, or African American literature) or substantial experience in literary scholarship with a PhD in a related field (such as African American studies or gender and sexuality studies). Successful candidates should demonstrate excellence in teaching at the college level and the potential for producing innovative research in their respective fields. Candidates who can teach survey courses that focus on global literatures and global traditions of the novel written in English, as well as those whose research and teaching explicitly address issues of postcolonial approaches and imperialist and neocolonial critiques; race and racialization; literatures of the African diaspora; Indigenetiy; and/or gender and sexuality studies and LGBTQ+ literatures are especially encouraged to apply.

The cover letter should address three items: the candidate's literary scholarship and publications; the candidate's teaching philosophy; and the candidate's approach to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility.
