Asst Prof of English, 20th- and 21st-c. American Fiction and Film

The Department of English at New Mexico State University seeks to hire an Assistant Professor  of 20th- and 21st-century American Fiction and Film.  The successful candidate will have a PhD in English, with specialization in both fiction and film; demonstrable commitment to both teaching and research; ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including, e.g., the second-year survey of American Literature, Perspectives on Film, Film Theory, studies in the novel, and advanced classes in both 20th- and 21st -century American fiction and film; ability to supervise MA theses and serve on MA committees; all requirements for PhD completed by date of hire in August 2024. We especially welcome applicants who will work with us to advance our vibrant, collaborative, and inclusive departmental culture.  Typical teaching load is 3/3 plus service on MA committees. 

The Department of English offers a BA in English (with emphases in Literature, Language, and Culture; and Rhetoric and Professional Communication), an MA in English (with emphases in Literature, Rhetoric and Professional Communication, and English Studies for Teachers), and a PhD in Rhetoric and Professional Communication. We are home to the university-wide writing program, programs in Literature and Rhetoric and Professional Communication, and the program in Gender and Sexuality Studies, which offers a BA (Main campus and Global/online), graduate and undergraduate minors, and hosts the Feminist Border Arts Film Festival.   

The candidate hired in this position will pursue an active research agenda alongside faculty working in a range of literary, cultural, rhetorical, and media studies and teach in our English BA and MA programs.  The English Department collaborates with other campus entities such as the interdisciplinary Borderland and Ethnic Studies Program and programs in animation and film production and graduate creative writing at the Creative Media Institute. We welcome candidates interested in building interdisciplinary links between programs within and beyond the English department.
