Assistant Professor of German Studies and Head of German Language Instruction

The Department of German and Russian Studies at Binghamton University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to serve as Head of German Language Instruction. The new hire will direct the German Language Program and expand its impact through innovative teaching and research. We seek a colleague whose teaching and whose scholarship in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, language pedagogy, or related fields will position them to lead and expand our German language program while actively contributing to the current state of the field.

This is a leadership role: the successful applicant will assume a variety of responsibilities related to the core language program, such as teaching and overseeing language courses within the six-semester German language sequence; supervising and mentoring other language instructors; and working with colleagues on curriculum development, revision, and strategic planning.

Salary, benefits, start-up package, and research support are competitive. Teaching load is 2/2; Ph.D. is required by the time the appointment begins in fall 2024; native or near-native proficiency in German and English is required.

To apply, please submit the following documents to Interview Exchange http://binghamton.interviewexchange.com/jobofferdetails.jsp?JOBID=167727:

1) a cover letter,

2) a CV,

3) a research statement,

4) a statement of teaching philosophy, and

5) the names and email addresses of three references.

Letters of recommendation and supplementary materials will be requested for candidates whose applications advance in the selection process. The position will remain open until filled. Applications received by November 10 will receive priority consideration. We anticipate that first-round interviews will be conducted over Zoom in mid-December, with campus visits taking place early in the spring semester.

The department welcomes applications from individuals who may have had nontraditional career paths, or who may have taken time off from their professional trajectory, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside of academia. We are especially interested in applicants who view teaching, program building, and outreach as areas to promote diversity and perspectives that are underrepresented in higher education. Binghamton University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Pedagogy, German Studies, or similar field; we welcome applications from ABD applicants, but note that a Ph.D. is required by the start of the appointment. Native or near-native proficiency in German and English is required, as is experience teaching college-level German. Experience in curricular development, supervising, mentorship, and outreach is desirable.
