Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (www.foreign.ecu.edu) is one of sixteen departments in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University. It is a diverse, research-active, and collegial unit that offers a Bachelor of Arts in foreign languages and literatures with eight concentration areas: Classical Studies, French, French Education, German, German Education, Hispanic Studies, Hispanic Studies Education, and Global Studies; minors in Classical Studies, French, German, and Hispanic Studies; a Master of Arts in Hispanic Studies, and a Hispanic Studies teaching area in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. The department offers Russian and Japanese in support of Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences interdisciplinary minors in Russian studies and Asian studies, and concentrations in the Bachelor of Arts in multidisciplinary studies Russian studies and Asian studies. The department also offers a variety of study abroad programs in Latin America and Europe.
Job Duties
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures invites applications for one full-time, non-tenure-track, fixed-term, faculty position at the title of Teaching Instructor, Senior Teaching Instructor, Master Teaching Instructor, Teaching Assistant Professor, or Teaching Associate Professor (depending upon qualifications) for the Spring 2024 semester and the 2024-2025 Academic Year. The faculty member will be responsible for teaching primarily lower-level language sequence courses, face-to-face, distance education and/or hybrid, with a typical teaching load of four courses per semester. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications, and full-time positions include benefits. Contingent upon available funding.
Minimum Education/Experience
For an appointment as Teaching Instructor – MA in German Studies or related field is required, or MA with 18 graduate credit hours in German Studies or related field.
For an appointment as Senior Teaching Instructor – MA in German Studies or related field is required in addition to a minimum of three consecutive years of full-time service in that title or have equivalent professional qualifications and have met the following criteria: consistently demonstrated effective teaching and/or other instructional responsibilities and engaged in professional development or professional service activities.
For appointment as Master Teaching Instructor – MA in German Studies or related field is required in addition to a minimum of six consecutive years of full-time service in that title or have equivalent professional qualifications and have met the following criteria: Have demonstrated excellence in teaching, have established an excellent professional reputation among colleagues, and is qualified and competent in mentoring others (such as students, instructors, etc.)
For an appointment as Teaching Assistant Professor – PhD in German Studies or related field is required.
For an appointment as Teaching Associate Professor – PhD in German or related field is required, with a minimum of three consecutive years of full-time service in that title or have equivalent professional qualifications and have met the following criteria: have consistently demonstrated effective teaching and/or other instructional responsibilities and engaged in professional development or professional service activities.
Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Native or near-native fluency in German and English is required.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
The ideal candidate will have experience teaching lower-level German language courses, using intercultural communicative teaching practices. Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and a willingness to perform university service, such as recruitment and cultural outreach. Candidates should have demonstrated the ability to teach online and/or hybrid courses, as well as experience incorporating innovative approaches in teaching language classes, such as flipping the classroom.
