The Department of Liberal Arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Literature, beginning in August of 2024. Salary is competitive with peer institutions and commensurate with quality of practice, scholarship, academic research, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.
The Department of Liberal Arts is one of twenty-three departments at SAIC. Liberal Arts provides the academic foundation for students’ success at SAIC. The department has 13 full-time faculty and over 100 part-time faculty. It offers 400 courses each year, primarily to undergraduate students pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art. Liberal Arts’ main content areas include English (First Year Seminar), humanities, natural science, social sciences, foreign languages, English for international students, and the Academic Access Program.

Full-time faculty in the Department of Liberal Arts teach within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. The successful candidate will teach courses in their areas of primary expertise as well as in the Liberal Arts department's topics-based first-year writing program. This position is expected to coordinate the literature course schedule, evaluate part-time literature faculty, and participate in curricular development, writing initiatives, and in the assessment of student learning in the Liberal Arts Department. They will also be expected to teach the department’s literature survey course which is required for BFA in Writing students. We welcome candidates with training in writing pedagogy, including first-year composition.
The Department seeks a literary scholar (field open) whose teaching and research focus on any time period from the nineteenth century to the present. A Ph.D. in English Literature or Comparative Literature is required by the date of hire. The department is especially interested in a scholar with a focus on global literatures; diasporic and postcolonial studies; environmental / eco critical approaches to literature; and/or literary theory and history. The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and practices in the field. We seek candidates with the knowledge and aptitude to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates should demonstrate their experience with, or aptitude for, departmental administration.
