Assistant Professor in Japanese Literature & Culture

The Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of Utah invites applications for a tenure-track position in Japanese literature and culture (with a preference for pre-modern or early modern expertise) at the Assistant Professor level beginning July 1, 2020. Areas of specialty could include visual culture, performance, and/or religious studies. Our current faculty teach and research in a wide variety of subjects from film to fashion, epic to lyric, the romanesque to romance, painting to porcelain, and dramas of revolution, nationhood, otherness, and identity.

The candidate is expected to contribute to all areas of undergraduate and graduate programs including curricular development. Clear evidence of research potential and demonstrated teaching excellence is required. Native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English is a prerequisite.

The teaching load is four courses (two per semester), including Japanese language teaching depending on program needs. Service commensurate with the position of assistant professor is expected. Applicants must have a PhD in Japanese or equivalent terminal degree in hand by August 15, 2020.
