Open Rank Professor in Writing Studies

Open Rank Professor in Writing Studies

Northwestern University in Qatar invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a full-time open rank faculty appointment in Writing Studies, to be appointed in the Liberal Arts Program.

We seek candidates with an active research agenda that focuses on Writing Studies in the Global South, with preference given to scholars who focus on Africa, the Arab world, or South Asia, whose work is comparative or transnational, whose work includes such areas as rhetoric and composition, second language writing, or creative writing, and who include ethics, gender, race, and/or coloniality in their analysis. We expect successful candidates to have a Ph.D. by the time of appointment in rhetoric and composition, writing studies, or creative writing and to have linguistic competence and field experience in their research area.

NU-Q is a globally embedded institution; it is one of three campuses of Northwestern University (Chicago, Doha, Evanston) and one of several institutions in the Qatar Foundation’s Education City in Doha, Qatar. Our mission is to mentor and educate students to become creative, ethical, and impactful communicators across cultural and national boundaries. We are committed to academic excellence, to a vibrant student life, and to high-level undergraduate student research and media making, particularly on the Global South. Located at the confluence of continents, NU-Q is a diverse global community with approximately 500 students from 60 countries.

Candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to our distinctive Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South (#IAS_NUQ), a community of evidence-based storytellers devoted to understanding the media, cultures, societies, politics, and history of the countries of the Global South. This includes mentoring our Undergraduate Global Fellows, participating in reading and research groups, and contributing to panels, seminars, conferences, and publications.

In addition to a demonstrated publication track record or evidence of a highly promising trajectory commensurate with career stage and/or rank, applicants should show competence in working with globally diverse communities, a strong commitment to excellence in inclusive teaching and mentoring, and dedication to institutional service and shared governance. Responsibilities include teaching writing courses—primarily the required general education writing sequence with occasional writing electives—in the Liberal Arts Program.

NU-Q provides competitive compensation and benefits. The medium of instruction is English, but proficiency in Arabic or another regional language is an advantage at NU-Q. Candidates with experience in US higher education as well as in the Arab region, women, and persons from traditionally underrepresented groups in academia are particularly encouraged to apply.
