Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Japanese

Description
The Department of Languages at Clemson University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor of Japanese, hire date August 15, 2024. Scholarly specialization is open, but possible areas include sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, modern/contemporary literature, and social, cultural, media, or gender studies. The successful candidate will demonstrate a promising and active scholarship agenda appropriate to an R1 university. Teaching responsibilities will include a combination of Japanese language courses and Japanese Studies courses mostly related to the candidate's area(s) of expertise.
The Japanese section at Clemson is steadily growing and includes majors in Modern Languages and Language and International Business as well as minors in Japanese Studies. The successful candidate will actively contribute to the program through interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching, advising students, extra-curricular activities, and assistance with the administration and expansion of the program. The ideal candidate will also seek ways of building connections with interdisciplinary programs and regional and international partners and organizations. The normal teaching load for research faculty is two courses per semester, along with usual service commitments.

Qualifications
Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, August 15, 2024
Evidence of effective teaching.
College-level Japanese-language teaching experience is expected.
Native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and English.
