POSITION: Assistant Professor in Spanish (Linguistics /Applied Linguistics or an interdisciplinary Hispanic Studies field)

Stetson University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Spanish (linguistics or interdisciplinary Hispanic Studies field) in the Department of World Languages and Cultures beginning August 2024. The successful candidate will be devoted to teaching undergraduate students and will have a demonstrated ability to teach Spanish and language courses at all levels. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute innovative coursework and (inter)disciplinary scholarship while expanding the teaching of Spanish. Qualifications to teach elementary Italian or Portuguese courses are desirable.


This position requires a Ph.D. in Spanish (Linguistics / Applied Linguistics or an interdisciplinary Hispanic Studies field). The candidate will have native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English. Competence in Italian and/or Portuguese is desirable. The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and be willing to teach Spanish language, and culture courses at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels.  Interest in developing an intermediate course in Spanish for the health professions is desirable. Other qualifications of strong interest include psycholinguistic, translation Studies, computational linguistics and sociolinguistics or any interdisciplinary field. We are especially interested in and strongly encourage applications from candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students from under-represented groups.


The teaching load is three undergraduate courses per semester. The candidate will also be involved in student organization advising, study abroad advising and promotion, and teaching apprentice supervision. Qualified candidates are expected to teach Spanish language from the introductory to advanced levels and interdisciplinary courses relevant to World Languages and Cultures. The Department of World Languages and Cultures ( currently consists of 8 full-time faculty members with expertise in Spanish, French, German, and Russian. (Italian, Arabic and Chinese are also offered through external or contingent faculty.) The Department offers majors with tracks in German Studies, Hispanic Studies, French and Francophone Studies, and a multi-language track in Translation. We also offer minors in French, German, Spanish, and Russian. Stetson also offers a major in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies and a minor in Latin American and Latino Studies.  Our faculty members are highly engaged teacher-scholars providing students unique experiences in their language education.


Stetson’s College of Arts and Sciences ( is the largest and most diverse of the University’s colleges and schools. With nineteen academic departments and nine interdisciplinary programs, the College is the liberal arts core of the University; it includes the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, education, and creative arts. DeLand is a town of 38,000 inhabitants located 20 miles west of Daytona Beach and 35 miles northeast of Orlando.
