The Department of Global Languages and Cultures in the College of Arts & Sciences at Texas A&M University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Afro-Latin and Latin American Indigenous Studies, with a 9 month appointment to begin August 1, 2024. The successful candidate will be expected to teach two courses per semester, with a teaching reduction in the first year of the position; present evidence of a research profile commensurate with the expectations of an R1 institution; and perform appropriate service at the departmental, College and University levels.
Applicants should have a Ph. D. in Latin American Studies or a related field in hand when their appointment commences. Applicants should present evidence of a research profile that includes at least two of the following areas: Afro-Caribbean culture and life, Afro-Brazilian culture and life, Latin American Indigenous cultures and life, and postcolonial or decolonial studies. A knowledge of contemporary critical and theoretical trends in African diasporic and global indigenous studies will be expected. A scholarly track record of presentations and publications in the fields of Africana and Hispanic or Latinx Studies will be highly desirable. Migration, cultural exchange, race, economic development, environment, social movements, existential predicaments are possible topics of engagement. Expertise in literary and cultural studies and the visual arts would be welcome. Ability to teach in Spanish or Portuguese is required. Candidates should be able to teach courses in their field of specialization and more general courses in Latin American Studies at all levels of the curriculum. A commitment to program building and innovative course design (including introductory courses) is essential.
The Department of Global Languages and Cultures houses degrees/programs in modern languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish) and Classics, in addition to the interdisciplinary programs in Africana Studies and Religious Studies, and the graduate (MA and PhD) program in Hispanic Studies. The department is part of the College of Arts and Sciences, which houses 18 departments and encompasses more than 130 areas of study.
